Lo studente e l'amicaThe student and the friend
Il and la have two special brothers, and the choice depends not on meaning but on the SOUND the word starts with. Before z and s+consonant the masculine becomes lo: lo zucchero, lo zaino, lo studente. Before a vowel, il and la squeeze into l': l'amico, l'amica, l'uomo, l'acqua. Same music for un/una: uno studente, uno zaino — un amico, un'amica. Mike asks for «il zucchero» at the bar… and the chapter fixes that too.

Lo, l', uno, un' — the sound decides
Explanation
Gender chooses between masculine and feminine; the opening SOUND chooses the form. Masculine: il is the normal form (il caffè), but before z and s+consonant it becomes lo — lo zucchero, lo zaino, lo studente, lo sport. Why? Try saying «il zucchero»: the tongue trips; lo glides. Before a vowel, masculine and feminine both squeeze into l': l'amico, l'uomo — l'amica, l'acqua. Same logic for chapter 4's article: uno studente, uno zaino (masculine z/s+consonant), un amico (masculine + vowel: plain un, NO apostrophe), un'amica (feminine + vowel: apostrophe). The singular picture is complete: il, lo, la, l' — un, uno, una, un'. Listen to the start of the word and the choice makes itself.
