Italian · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 42
In vacanzaOn holiday
Chapter 25 promised the «travel arc» would claim the sea — here it is: il mare, la montagna, la vacanza, la valigia, the albergo with CILS's attested booking. The trip is told in the past, and chapter 34's two-auxiliary exam returns in the opposite direction: after learning that «ho andato» is forbidden, someone overcorrects and puts essere EVERYWHERE — «sono visitato Roma». Visiting does something to Rome: avere. The frozen article-less pairs (al mare, in montagna, in vacanza) complete the holiday map.

Com'è andata la vacanza?— How was the holiday?
- GiuliaMike, sei tornato dal weekend a Napoli! Com'è andata?Mike, you're back from the Naples weekend! How did it go? (sei tornato — essere, correctly; com'è andata — the how-did-it-go formula, andata agreeing with an unspoken la vacanza.)
- MikeFantastica! Fantastic! I went to the sea, I am visited the centro and I am eaten so much pizza! (THE SLIP ×2 — the reverse of chapter 34: after burning «ho andato», Mike now pours essere on everything. But visiting and eating DO something to their objects: avere.)
- GiuliaFrena! Andare ti muove: SONO andato, giusto. Brakes! Andare moves you: SONO andato, correct. But visiting and eating do something to the centro and the pizza: HO visitato, HO mangiato. The test, always the same one! (The fix: don't swap one blanket rule for another — ask the question every time.)
Quattro verbi, zero errori!Right: I went to the sea, I visited the centro, I ate the pizza — and I came back happy. Four verbs, zero mistakes! (The corrected itinerary: essere-avere-avere-essere, each earned by the test; felice agreeing as the souvenir.)

Mare o montagna?— Sea or mountains?
Professoressa, summer's most Italian question: do you go to the sea or to the mountains? (The frozen pair face-off: AL mare keeps its article inside the fusion, IN montagna goes bare — two idioms, two shapes, learn them as photos.)
Both! In July I was at the seaside in Sicily: I booked the hotel in March — in August everything is full! (sono stata — stare's essere past with feminine agreement; ho prenotato l'albergo — the attested CILS pair in the past; a + month twice.)
- MarcoE in montagna? And the mountains? As a Neapolitan I say: the sea is home. But the mountains… I've seen gorgeous photos. (da napoletano «as a Neapolitan» — da naming the role; the debate's two hearts laid out.)
- SofiaAllora quest'inverno andiamo tutti in montagna: c'è la neve, Ulisse corre, e la sera — cioccolata calda in albergo! Then this winter we all go to the mountains: there's snow, Ulisse runs, and in the evening — hot chocolate at the hotel! (quest'inverno — questo elided, P7; the ch28 weather kit and the frozen pairs closing the plan; cioccolata calda, glossed by life itself.)

The trip in the past — the auxiliary exam, round trip
Explanation
Telling a trip is the perfect workout for the two auxiliaries, because a trip constantly alternates movements and actions: sono partito (movement) → ho visitato il Colosseo (action on the Colosseum) → sono tornato (movement) → ho mangiato la pizza (action on the pizza). Chapter 34 burned «ho andato»; this chapter burns the opposite error — «sono visitato Roma» — born of over-correction: once the movement rule is learned, the hand puts essere everywhere. But the question must be asked VERB BY VERB, never per whole sentence: does the verb do something to an object (visito Roma, mangio la pizza, prenoto l'albergo)? → avere, participle frozen. Does the verb move or change me (parto, arrivo, torno, salgo, resto)? → essere, participle agreed. Around the story, the holiday's geography in frozen pairs: AL mare (the article survives inside the fusion), IN montagna, IN vacanza, IN spiaggia, IN aereo (bare). There is no logic to hunt — al mare and in montagna froze that way centuries ago: photograph them. And the CILS holiday-story model fits in four moves: sono andato/a + where, ho visitato + what, mi è piaciuto/a + verdict, sono tornato/a + when.
Examples
- Sono partita venerdì e sono arrivata al mare a mezzogiorno.I left on Friday and reached the seaside at noon. (Two movements, two essere, two feminine agreements — a woman's travel log.)
- Abbiamo visitato una mostra e abbiamo comprato dieci cartoline. We visited an exhibition and bought ten postcards. (Two actions on objects, two avere — mostra and cartoline both attested CILS words.)
- Quest'estate andiamo al mare; l'anno prossimo, in montagna. This summer we go to the seaside; next year, to the mountains. (The frozen-pair face-off in the planning present — article inside al, nothing after in.)
- Sono andata in Sicilia, ho visitato Palermo, mi è piaciuta tantissimo — e sono tornata ieri.I went to Sicily, visited Palermo, liked it enormously — and came back yesterday. (The four-move CILS holiday story in one breath: essere, avere, piacere-essere, essere — every auxiliary earned.)
