be — yes/no questions + short answers

Explanation

To make a yes/no question with be, swap be and the subject: She is… → Is she…?, They are… → Are they…?. Answer short: Yes, she is. / No, she isn't. (= is not). In a short answer be is never contracted — you do not say "Yes, she's."

Examples

  • Is she your mother? — Yes, she is.Is she your mother? — Yes, she is.
  • Is he old? — No, he isn't.Is he old? — No, he isn't.
  • Are they happy? — Yes, they are.Are they happy? — Yes, they are.
