HalloHello
Your first words of German — and the first hurdle is the sounds. German has four characters English doesn't: the umlauts ä, ö, ü and the ß (sharp s). On top of that come ch (as in ich or ach) and sch (like English sh). The good news: German is read almost the way it is written — far more regular than French or English. We start with greetings — hallo, guten Tag, guten Morgen — and the everyday ja / nein / okay. Standard German (Hochdeutsch).
