ひらがな: ぼいんと か・さ ぎょう— Hiragana: Vowels and the か / さ Rows

The five vowels are the backbone of hiragana. Every other kana is a consonant plus one of these five.

  • alike "a" in "father"
  • ilike "ee" in "see", short
  • ulike "oo" in "boot" but unrounded
  • elike "e" in "bed"
  • olike "o" in "more"

The "k" sound + a vowel. ka ki ku ke ko.

  • kak + a
  • kik + i
  • kuk + u
  • kek + e
  • kok + o — as in こんにちは

The "s" sound + a vowel. sa shi su se so. Watch out: し is "shi" and す is close to "su".

  • sas + a — as in さようなら
  • shiirregular: "shi", not "si"
  • sus + u, lightly
  • ses + e
  • sos + o
