감사합니다Thank you

Gamsahamnida

The second Hangul chapter. Learn the remaining plain and aspirated consonants, and 받침 (final consonants). All finals reduce to just seven sounds — a simplifying rule. Practise saying thank you and sorry. Still no grammar point.

한글: 격음과 받침— Hangul: Aspirated Consonants and Finals

First, four more plain consonants complete the plain set.

  • b / pbetween "b" in "boy" and "p" in "spy" · both lips, like ㅁ but with a puff of voice
  • slike "s" in "see" (softer before ㅣ, toward "sh") · tongue near the ridge, air hissing through
  • jbetween "j" in "jam" and "ch" in "itch" · tongue body against the palate
  • hlike "h" in "hat" · open throat, a breath of air

Aspirated consonants are made in the same place as the plain ones but release a strong puff of air. Hold a tissue in front of your mouth: it flutters on an aspirated sound and barely moves on a plain one.

  • klike "k" in "key" (strong puff) · ㄱ + aspiration
  • tlike "t" in "top" (strong puff) · ㄷ + aspiration
  • plike "p" in "pen" (strong puff) · ㅂ + aspiration
  • chlike "ch" in "cheese" (strong puff) · ㅈ + aspiration

A 받침 is the final sound written at the bottom of a syllable. Almost any letter can be a 받침, but only seven sounds actually come out. And a 받침 is "stopped" at the end — the air is not released after it.

Let's read today's key phrase one syllable at a time:
