Adjective phrases and other phrase types

Explanation

Ch2 introduced noun, verb, and adjective phrases. This chapter adds: (1) "不一会儿" (一会儿 in negative form) — a time phrase meaning "before long / shortly." Example: 不一会儿他就来了 ("Before long, he arrived"). (2) "什么的" — listing phrase, like English "and so on / etc." Example: 我喜欢看书, 听音乐什么的 ("I like reading, listening to music, etc."). (3) Adjective-phrase expansions: 不太 X / 非常 X / 真 X — modifiers stacked. These small phrases are the building blocks of natural-sounding Chinese.

Examples

  • 你说得对. You're right.
  • 我有一个想法, 我看不对. I have an idea — I think it's not right.
  • 我喜欢看书, 听音乐什么的. I like reading, listening to music, and so on.
  • 不一会儿, 谢平就来了. Before long, Xie Ping arrived.
