Grammar
Verb-phrase / clause as object (三44)
Explanation
Some verbs take an action (verb phrase) or a whole situation (subject-predicate clause) as their object, not just a noun. 打算 / 计划 / 决定 / 想 / 希望 / 喜欢 all do this. 我打算去南方 (去南方 = verb-phrase object). 我希望大家都来 (大家都来 = clause object). A Band 3 syntax point — objects are no longer just simple nouns.
Examples
- 我打算去南方旅行. I plan to travel south.
- 他决定坐火车去. He decided to go by train.
- 我希望这次旅行很有意思. I hope this trip is interesting.
- 我们计划下个月出发. We plan to set off next month.
Grammar
为了 + purpose (三26)
Explanation
Grammar-01 showed actions can be objects. `为了 + purpose` introduces the GOAL of doing something — 为了 takes the purpose (a noun or action), then a clause states what was done for it. 为了这次旅行, 我准备了很久 (For this trip, I prepared a long time). Distinguish 为了 (purpose) from 为 (三23, beneficiary: 为大家服务).
Examples
- 为了这次旅行, 我准备了很久. For this trip, I prepared a long time.
- 为了去南方, 我们计划了一个月. To go south, we planned for a month.
- 为了早点出发, 我们五点就起床了. To leave early, we got up at five.
- 为了买便宜的票, 他每天看手机. To buy cheap tickets, he checks his phone every day.
