Quantity complement: time elapsed since an action (三52)

Explanation

`Action + 了 + duration + 了` marks the time ELAPSED since the action happened. 我们到酒店两个小时了 = arriving happened two hours ago, up to now. 他来中国三个月了 = it's been three months since he came. The sentence-final 了 is required (= "up to now"). Differs from Band 2's V+了+duration (how long the action lasted) — this is the gap AFTER the action.

Examples

  • 我们到酒店两个小时了. It's been two hours since we got to the hotel.
  • 他来中国三个月了. It's been three months since he came to China.
  • 我起床一个小时了. I've been up for an hour.
  • 这家店开了五年了. This shop has been open five years.

Verb-object separable words (三05)

Explanation

Some words look single but are really "verb + object" and can SPLIT to insert other elements — separable words. 帮忙 → 帮我的忙 (do someone a favour); 看病 → 看一次病; 上课 → 上三节课; 请假 → 请一天假. 了 / measure words / 的 go BETWEEN the verb and object, not after the whole word. Common in daily life: 他帮了我的忙 / 我看了一次病.

Examples

  • 他帮了我的忙. He helped me out.
  • 我去看了一次病. I went to see a doctor once.
  • 我们今天上了三节课. We had three classes today.
  • 他想请一天假. He wants to take a day off.
