Serial-verb sentence 2 — manner / purpose (三56)

Explanation

One subject does two actions in sequence, the first relating to the second: (1) first = manner of the second: 笑着说 (say while smiling) / 坐飞机去 (go by plane). (2) the second is the PURPOSE of the first: 去超市买东西 (go to the supermarket to buy things) / 来中国学习. Both verbs share one subject.

Examples

  • 他笑着说: "没事." He said with a smile, "It's nothing."
  • 我坐飞机去北京. I'm flying to Beijing.
  • 他去超市买东西. He goes to the supermarket to buy things.
  • 我来中国学习中文. I came to China to study Chinese.

Question words as "any/every": 谁都 / 什么都 (三07)

Explanation

Grammar-01 was serial verbs. Here: a question word (谁 / 什么 / 哪儿 / 什么时候 / 怎么) + 都 / 也 is NOT a question — it means "any/every one" (universal). 谁都喜欢她 = everyone likes her. 我什么都吃 = I eat anything. Negative uses 也: 我哪儿也没去.

Examples

  • 谁都喜欢她. Everyone likes her.
  • 我什么都吃. I eat anything.
  • 你什么时候来都可以. You can come any time.
  • 这件事我哪儿也没说. I haven't told anyone about this.
