你觉得呢? — What do you think?

  1. 同学 xiǎohóng, lǎoshījīntiāndejuédezěnmeyàng? Xiao Hong, what did you think of today's class?
  2. 小红 zhèménshìhěnyǒuma? ne? Isn't this course really interesting? You?
  3. 同学 juédehěnyǒu? juédeyǒudiǎnnán. You find it interesting? I thought it was a bit hard.
  4. 小红 rènwéilǎoshījiěshìqīngchǔ, lehěnduō, dànshìyàoduō. I think the teacher explained clearly; I took lots of notes, but we need more review.
  5. 同学 dexiǎngdetóng. Your idea is different from mine.
  6. 小红 tóngdekàndōuyǒudào. menshuōchūláitǎolùnba. Different views can both make sense. Let's voice them and discuss.

  1. 小红 kànzhègewènyīnggāizhèyàngxiǎng. I think we should think about it this way.
  2. 同学 kàndìng. néngháiyǒubiédekàn. I'm not sure. Maybe there are other views.
  3. 小红 shuōduì. tóngdexiǎng. Well said. I agree with your idea.
  4. 同学 kànlǎoshīxiàhuìjiǎngqīngchǔ. I think the teacher will explain clearly next time.

Rhetorical questions for emphasis (三76)

Explanation

A rhetorical question looks like a question but emphasises an affirmation or negation. Two common patterns: 不是 … 吗? (今天不是星期天吗? = it certainly is Sunday). 难道 … 吗? (难道你不知道吗? = you surely should know). Stronger than a plain statement — common in discussion.

Examples

  • 今天不是星期天吗? Isn't today Sunday?
  • 难道你没听说吗? Don't tell me you haven't heard?
  • 这不是很简单吗? Isn't this very simple?
  • 难道我学不会吗? You think I can't learn it?

Rising intonation as a question (三78)

Explanation

Grammar-01 was rhetorical. Here: without changing word order or adding 吗, just RAISE the intonation at the end to ask (colloquial). 今天是星期六? (rising = confirming). 你打算去旅行? Used with surprise or confirmation, more casual than a 吗 question.

Examples

  • 今天是星期六? Today's Saturday?
  • 你打算去旅行? You're planning to travel?
  • 这是你写的? You wrote this?
  • 你也喜欢这门课? You like this course too?
