写简历 Writing a résumé

Xiě jiǎnlì

周月 writes her résumé. Teaches V + 过 + N (have done X — experience) and 从来没 + V + 过 (never V'd before).

我学过中文 — I've studied Chinese

  1. 周月 zhǎogōngzuòyàoyóujiàngěigōng, kāishǐxiějiǎn, xuédefenxiānxiě. Job hunting means emailing companies, so I'm starting the CV — the education part first.
  2. 周月 cóngxuéle. zhuānshìzhōngwén. Graduated from university. Major in Chinese.
  3. 同学 deyīngwénzěnmeyàng? How's your English?
  4. 周月 xuéguòyīngwénnián, xuéguòdiǎnbiéde. I've studied English five years and a bit of other languages.
  5. 同学 zuòguòshénmegōngzuò? What work have you done?
  6. 周月 zuòguòliǎnggōngzuò, bāngguòlǎoshīgǎizuò. I've done two jobs and helped a teacher mark homework.

我从来没工作过 — I've never had a job

  1. 周月 cóngláiméiyǒuguòzhèngshìgōngzuò. I've never had a full-time job.
  2. 同学 méiguān. xuéxiàodenéngsuànjīngyàn. It's fine. School skills count as experience too.
  3. 周月 cóngláiméixiěguòjiǎn, zhīdàozěnmexiě. I've never written a CV — don't know how.
  4. 同学 zuòguòdeshìdōuxiěxià: xuéguòde, zuòguòdegōngzuò. Write everything you've done — courses, jobs.
  5. 周月 zhèmeduōshì, tiānxiěwán, yīngwéndegèngxiěhǎo. So much to put down — I can't finish in a day, and the English one I can't write well.
  6. 同学 xiānyòngzhōngwénxiě, hòuzàiyòngyīngwénxiě. Write in Chinese first, write it in English later.

Potential complement: V + 得/不 + result (三48)

Explanation

Insert 得 / 不 between a verb and its result/directional complement to mean "can / cannot achieve it". 听得懂 / 听不懂; 做得完 / 做不完; 去得了 / 去不了. 这件工作我做得了 (am able) / 做不了 (cannot). Close to 能 + V, but the potential complement stresses whether the RESULT can be reached.

Examples

  • 这个工作我做得了. I can do this job.
  • 老师的话我都听得懂. I can understand everything the teacher says.
  • 这么多事, 今天做不完. So many things — can't finish today.
  • 明天的事我去得了. I can make it to tomorrow's thing.

Verb / clause as attributive (三45, reuse)

Explanation

Grammar-01 was potential complements. This revisits and deepens ch10's point: 的 turns an action into an attributive. Especially useful for résumés: 我做过的工作 (the jobs I've done) / 我学过的东西 / 我去过的公司. Structure: (subject +) verb-phrase + 的 + noun — packing "have done / have studied" experience into one phrase.

Examples

  • 这是我做过的工作. This is the work I've done.
  • 我写了学过的课. I wrote down the courses I've taken.
  • 这是我去过的公司. This is a company I've been to.
  • 他说了自己做过的事. He talked about the things he's done.
