— alternating states (三61)

Explanation

Y" marks two actions/states alternating back and forth. 天气一会儿冷一会儿热 (the weather is now cold, now hot) / 他一会儿想运动一会儿想休息. Used for unstable, changing situations; X and Y are often opposite or related.

Examples

The weather is now cold, now hot.
He wants to exercise one moment, rest the next.
The child cries one moment and laughs the next.
I feel hot then cold — not too well.

Explanation

Grammar-01 was alternation. This revisits ch27's approximate numbers: number + 左右 (三十分钟左右) / 大概 + number / adjacent numerals (三四次). Handy for exercise amounts:

Examples

I run about thirty minutes a day.
He exercises for about an hour.
I exercise three or four times a week.
It's about twenty minutes on foot.
