Italian · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 35

Mi è piaciuto!I liked it!

The past's checkpoint chapter: piacere meets the passato prossimo, and since the liked thing is in charge, the auxiliary is ESSERE and the participle agrees with the liked thing — mi è piaciuto il film, mi è piaciuta la pizza, mi sono piaciuti gli spaghetti. «Mi è piaciuto» is an attested formula in the CILS cloze, alongside «il corso è iniziato» and «mi ha aiutata»: this chapter trains exactly that test — pick the right auxiliary, ten blanks, no mercy. It is the general ho/sono review before the final two arcs.

Ti è piaciuta Roma?— Did you like Rome?

  1. SofiaMike, il viaggio! Ti è piaciuta Roma?Mike, the trip! Did you like Rome? (ti è piaciutA — the participle already agreeing with Roma, feminine; the exam question in its natural habitat.)
  2. MikeTantissimo! Mi ha piaciuto tutto: il Colosseo, la pizza…So much! It has-liked me everything: the Colosseum, the pizza… (THE SLIP — the CILS cloze's favorite wrong answer: piacere's past on avere. But the liked thing drives, and drivers of piacere ride essere.)
  3. SofiaMi È piaciuto! Piacere viaggia con essere — e il participio segue la cosa: mi è piaciutO il Colosseo, mi è piaciutA la pizza, mi sono piaciutI gli spaghetti.Mi È piaciuto! Piacere travels with essere — and the participle follows the thing: mi è piaciutO il Colosseo, mi è piaciutA la pizza, mi sono piaciutI gli spaghetti. (The fix: chapter 27's driver rule meets chapter 34's agreement rule.)
  4. MikeMi è piaciuta Roma, mi sono piaciuti i viaggi in treno… e mi è piaciuto questo corso, professoressa!I liked Rome, I liked the train rides… and I liked this course, professoressa! (Three agreements in a row, all correct — and «mi è piaciuto il corso» quietly rehearses the attested CILS cloze pair.)

Ho o sono? Il gioco— Ho or sono? The game

  1. MarcoGiulia, giochiamo: io dico la frase, tu scegli ho o sono. Pronti? «___ mangiato una pizza».Giulia, let's play: I say the sentence, you pick ho or sono. Ready? «___ mangiato una pizza». (The CILS Prova 2 shape as a bar game; scegli «you pick», glossed.)
  2. GiuliaHO mangiato — mangiare fa qualcosa alla pizza: squadra avere. Adesso io: «___ arrivata tardi».HO mangiato — eating does something to the pizza: team avere. Now me: «___ arrivata tardi». (Round one solved with the test question; the -a in arrivata already whispers the answer to round two.)
  3. MarcoSONO arrivata — arrivare mi muove, e la -a dice che parla una donna. Difficile adesso: «Il corso ___ iniziato». «Mi ___ aiutata».SONO arrivata — arriving moves me, and the -a says a woman is speaking. Hard mode now: «Il corso ___ iniziato». «Mi ___ aiutata». (The two verbatim CILS cloze items, served raw.)
  4. GiuliaIl corso È iniziato — inizia da solo, si muove nel tempo. E mi HA aiutata — aiutare fa qualcosa A ME: avere! Abbiamo vinto l'esame?Il corso È iniziato — it starts by itself, moving through time. And mi HA aiutata — helping does something TO ME: avere! Did we win the exam? (Both attested items solved with the one test question; the -a on aiutata is receptive polish — Band 2 explains it.)

Mi è piaciuto — and the great ho/sono review

Explanation

Piacere's past follows its same rules as always: the liked thing is in charge. So auxiliary ESSERE and participle agreed with IT: mi è piaciuto il film (masculine), mi è piaciuta la pizza (feminine), mi sono piaciuti gli spaghetti (plural), mi sono piaciute le piazze. The liker stays a pronoun in front: mi, ti. Now the general review, because the CILS test «Analisi P2» is exactly this: ten sentences, ten ho/sono blanks. The method in three questions: 1) Does the verb do something TO another thing? → avere, participle frozen (ho mangiato la pizza). 2) Does the verb move or change its doer? → essere, participle agreed (sono andata, siamo partiti). 3) Is it piacere or family (piacere, sembrare)? → essere, participle agreed with the THING (mi è piaciuta). The exam's three ambushes: «ho andato» (movement on avere — never), «mi ha piaciuto» (piacere on avere — never), «Anna è andato» (agreement forgotten). And the two attested lines to know by heart: il corso È iniziato, mi HA aiutata — the first changes by itself (essere), the second does something to me (avere).

Examples

  • Mi è piaciuta la pizza; mi sono piaciuti gli spaghetti.I liked the pizza; I liked the spaghetti. (Feminine singular, masculine plural — the participle mirrors the liked thing exactly.)
  • Ho mangiato · sono andata · mi è piaciuto — tre frasi, tre regole.I ate · I went · I liked it — three sentences, three rules. (The whole checkpoint in one line: doing → avere; moving → essere + agreement; piacere → essere + thing-agreement.)
  • Il corso è iniziato la settimana scorsa e mi è piaciuto molto. The course began last week and I liked it a lot. (Both attested CILS lines welded into one natural sentence — è twice, each for its own reason.)
  • Non mi è piaciuto il traffico — ma Roma? Mi è piaciuta tutta!I didn't like the traffic — but Rome? I liked all of it! (Negative, then the feminine agreement — chapter 27's old enemy and old love, both in the past now.)
