Use 있다 and 없다 (있어요/없어요) for existence and having. Ask and answer how many people are in a family with 몇 and the people-counter 명 — the forms 한·두·세·네·다섯 + 명 are memorised whole here; the full native number set comes in chapter 11. You also meet family words (아버지·어머니·아빠·엄마), 많다/적다, and the honorific counter 분.

Existence & having: 있다 / 없다

Explanation

있다 means "there is / to have"; 없다 means "there isn't / to not have". One verb covers both existence and possession. The thing that exists or is owned takes 이/가 — 이 after a consonant, 가 after a vowel. The polite forms are 있어요 / 없어요.

  • 친구가 없어요.(I) don't have a friend.
  • 한국 친구가 있어요?Do you have a Korean friend?

몇 + 명 — counting people

Explanation

몇 asks a quantity as "몇 + counter". People are counted with the counter 명. The number uses the attributive form of the native numbers: 한 명, 두 명, 세 명, 네 명, 다섯 명. Memorise these five whole here; the full native set is taught in chapter 11. To count someone older/senior, use the honorific counter 분 instead of 명: 한 분, 두 분.

  • 세 명이에요.There are three (people).
  • 우리 가족은 네 명이에요.My family is four people.
  • 선생님은 한 분이에요.There is one teacher. (honorific 분)

These are cases where a final ㅎ weakens or drops before a following vowel. The spelling stays; only the sound softens.

  • 좋아요joayofinal ㅎ + 아 → ㅎ drops — "(it) is good" (preview of 좋다, ch7)
  • 많아요manayoㄶ + 아 → ㅎ drops, ㄴ links over — "there are many" (많다, this chapter)
  • 괜찮아요gwaenchanayoㄶ + 아 → ㅎ drops — "it's okay" (괜찮다, ch2)
