The numbers 1-10 and qual

Explanation

The numbers 1 to 10: um, dois, três, quatro, cinco, seis, sete, oito, nove, dez. Almost all are fixed, BUT two of them agree in gender, like the article: um/uma and dois/duas — um irmão, uma irmã; dois irmãos, duas irmãs. To ask about a specific thing use qual (which/what), not "o que": "Qual é o seu número?" asks for a specific number. Use o que to ask for a definition ("O que é isto?", in ch13).

Examples

  • Qual é o seu número?What is your number?
  • Tenho dois irmãos e uma irmã.I have two brothers and one sister. (dois m, uma f)
  • Minha família tem cinco pessoas. My family has five people.
  • Tenho duas filhas.I have two daughters. (duas, feminine)
