English · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 28

Weather and seasons O tempo e as estações

Falar do tempo. O inglês usa um sujeito "de enchimento", "it", que por si só não significa nada: It's hot. It's cold. It's sunny. It's raining. Para ações em curso acrescentas -ing: It's raining. It's snowing. Para perguntar, diz "What's the weather like?". O coreano pode omitir o sujeito e dizer só o adjetivo, por isso os coreanos dizem "Is raining" ou "Very cold today"; o inglês precisa sempre de "it": It's raining. It's very cold today.

Is cold or It's cold? — Is cold ou It's cold?

  1. Emma How's the weather in Seoul today, Minsu? Como está o tempo em Seul hoje, Minsu?
  2. Minsu Is very cold. And is snowing. Muito frio. E a nevar. (deslize: o inglês precisa do sujeito de enchimento "it": "It's very cold. It's snowing."; o coreano pode omitir o sujeito, o inglês não)
  3. Emma Start each one with "it": "It's very cold. It's snowing." Começa cada uma com "it": "It's very cold. It's snowing."
  4. Minsu Ah, it's very cold today, and it's snowing. Ah, hoje está muito frio, e está a nevar.

What's the weather like here? — Como está o tempo aqui?

  1. Minsu What's the weather like here in summer? Como está o tempo aqui no verão?
  2. Emma It's hot and sunny. I love summer. Está calor e sol. Adoro o verão.
  3. Minsu And in winter? Is it very cold? E no inverno? Faz muito frio?
  4. Emma It's cold and it often rains. Bring an umbrella! Está frio e chove muitas vezes. Traz um guarda-chuva!

English weather sentences start with "it" — a subject that fills the slot but points to nothing. For a state, use "it is" ("it's") + adjective: It's hot. It's cold. It's sunny. It's windy. For rain and snow happening now, use "it is" + -ing: It's raining. It's snowing. Add "today", "in summer" or "in winter" to say when: In summer it's hot. In winter it's cold. To ask, use "What's the weather like?" — What's the weather like today? — It's cloudy. Never drop the "it": say "It's raining", not "Is raining".

As frases do tempo em inglês começam por "it" — um sujeito que preenche o lugar mas não aponta para nada. Para um estado, usa "it is" ("it's") + adjetivo: It's hot. It's cold. It's sunny. It's windy. Para a chuva e a neve a cair agora, usa "it is" + -ing: It's raining. It's snowing. Acrescenta "today", "in summer" ou "in winter" para dizer quando: In summer it's hot. In winter it's cold. Para perguntar, usa "What's the weather like?" — What's the weather like today? — It's cloudy. Nunca omitas o "it": diz "It's raining", não "Is raining".

  • It's hot and sunny today. Hoje está calor e sol.
