Degree adverbs: 比较 / 更加 / 相当 (三12, reuse)

Explanation

Revisits ch07's three degree adverbs, handy for hobbies: 比较 = fairly (画画比较安静). 更加 = even more (比起看电视, 我更加喜欢看书). 相当 = quite/very, written-leaning (这个爱好相当有意思). All before an adjective or psych-verb.

Examples

  • 这个爱好相当有意思. This hobby is quite interesting.
  • 比起看电视, 我更加喜欢看书. Compared to TV, I prefer reading even more.
  • 画画比较安静. Drawing is fairly quiet.
  • 听音乐让我更加舒服. Listening to music makes me feel even better.

对 X 来说 — "as for X / from X's perspective"

Explanation

Grammar-01: 比起 X (contrast). `对 X 来说` reframes X as the perspective / topic: "from X's point of view, …". 对我来说, 安静的时间最重要. X is usually a person or group (我 / 学生们 / 大家), occasionally a context (对今天来说). Followed by an evaluative clause. Not a comparison.

Examples

  • duìláishuō, ānjìngdeshíjiānzuìzhòngyào. For me, quiet time matters most.
  • 对学生来说, 考试很重要. For students, exams matter.
  • 对一个忙人来说, 一杯咖啡就是最好的休息. For a busy person, a coffee is the best rest.
  • 对今天的我们来说, 健康最重要. For us today, health matters most.
