German · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 18
Mein TagesablaufMy daily routine
The daily routine with separable verbs. A separable verb has a prefix that jumps to the END in the sentence: aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. einkaufen → Ich kaufe am Samstag ein. The mistake is not separating it ("ich aufstehe" ✗). And reflexive verbs: sich duschen → Ich dusche mich. New vocabulary: aufstehen, sich duschen, arbeiten, lernen, schlafen, einkaufen, immer, gestern.

Separable verbs (ich stehe auf)
Explanation
Many everyday verbs are separable: aufstehen, einkaufen. In the sentence the prefix (auf-, ein-) does not stay on the verb — it jumps to the END: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. Ich kaufe am Samstag ein. The English-speaker mistake is leaving the prefix on the verb: "Ich aufstehe" ✗ → "Ich stehe auf" ✓. Reflexive verbs need "mich/dich/sich": sich duschen → Ich dusche mich, du duschst dich. Non-separable verbs stay normal: Ich arbeite, ich lerne, ich schlafe.
Examples
- Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.I get up at seven.
- Ich dusche mich am Morgen.I shower in the morning.
- Ich arbeite am Mittag und lerne am Abend.I work at midday and study in the evening.
- Ich kaufe am Samstag ein.I do the shopping on Saturday.
