Key point: to say WHERE something is, you use „sein“ + „in“ with the DATIVE: „Die Bank ist in der Straße“ (die → der), „Ich bin im Park“ (in + dem = im). Where is it? — sein + in (im / in der)
Explanation
To say WHERE something is, you use „sein“ + „in“. After „in“ (location, no movement) comes the DATIVE. The articles change: der → dem, das → dem, die → der. And „in + dem“ contracts to „im“: „Ich bin im Park“ (der Park → im), „im Büro“ (das Büro → im), but „in der Schule“ (die Schule → in der), „in der Stadt“. More contractions: an + dem = am („am Bahnhof“), zu + dem = zum („zum Markt“). English speakers say „in dem Park“ separately ✗ → „im Park“ ✓. To ask: „Wo ist die Bank?“ / „Wo bist du?“. For „auf der Toilette“ you use „auf“.
