How old are you?

Myeot sar-ieyo?

We learn native-Korean numbers (하나, 둘, 셋…). Unlike the Sino numbers (일, 이, 삼), native numbers count age, hours, and objects. A key change: before a counter (살, 개, etc.) Ask age with "몇 살이에요?" and answer like "스무 살이에요". Hangul corner: reading the 받침 in 다섯/여섯/여덟.

Native-Korean numbers · 살

Explanation

(20). They are used differently from Sino numbers (일 이 삼) — native numbers count age (살), hours, and objects. The key rule: before a counter, 1–4 and 20 shorten — 하나→한, 둘→두, 셋→세, 넷→네, 스물→스무. To ask age: "몇 살이에요?".

Examples

  • myeotsarieyo?How old are you?
  • 스무 살이에요.I'm twenty. (스물 → 스무 before 살)
I'm nineteen.
My younger sibling is five. (다섯 doesn't shorten)
