Demonstratives 这 / 那 + the conjunction 和

Explanation

Two items: (1) Demonstratives 这 (this) / 那 (that). For pointing at people / things, near vs far. Pattern: 这 / 那 + 是 + N. 这是我的爷爷 (this is my grandpa); 那是我妹妹. With 个: 这个 (this one), 那个 (that one). (2) Conjunction 和 (hé): joins two nouns. A 和 B. 爸爸和妈妈 (dad and mom), 我和朋友 (me and friends). NOTE: 和 only joins NOUNS — not clauses. (Sentences use different connectors, taught later in book 2/3.)

Examples

  • 这是我的爷爷.This is my grandfather.
  • 那是我的奶奶.That is my grandmother.
  • 爸爸和妈妈都是中国人.Dad and mom are both Chinese.
  • 我有一个哥哥和一个妹妹.I have an older brother and a younger sister.
