Possessives + demonstratives (este/esse)
Explanation
The possessives meu/minha and seu/sua agree with the THING possessed, not the owner: meu pai (pai is masculine), minha mãe (mãe is feminine). The demonstratives agree in gender and number: este/esta (this), esse/essa (that). So "Esta é minha família" — família is feminine, hence esta + minha. And "Este é meu pai" — pai is masculine, hence este + meu.
Examples
- Esta é minha família. This is my family. (família is feminine → esta + minha)
- Este é meu pai e esta é minha mãe.This is my father and this is my mother.
- Essa criança é minha amiga. That child is my friend.
