Russian · TORFL Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 17
Дни неделиThe days of the week
The days of the week: понедельник, вторник, среда, четверг, пятница, суббота, воскресенье. To say "on a day", use the preposition "в" + the accusative case: в понедельник, в четверг. English speakers often forget "в" and say "работаю понедельник" — the correct form is "работаю В понедельник". Feminine days change their ending: средА → в средУ, пятницА → в пятницУ, субботА → в субботУ. Ask: "Какой сегодня день?". New words: неделя, понедельник, вторник, среда, четверг, пятница, сегодня, завтра, вчера, выходные. Cyrillic corner: reading "среда, четверг, пятница".

"В" + a day (в понедельник)
Explanation
The days of the week: понедельник, вторник, среда, четверг, пятница, суббота, воскресенье. To say WHEN something happens, use "в" + the accusative: в понедельник, во вторник ("во" before a hard cluster), в четверг. Masculine days look like the dictionary form. Feminine days change -а to -у: средА → в средУ, пятницА → в пятницУ, субботА → в субботУ. English speakers drop the preposition: "работаю понедельник" ✗ → "работаю в понедельник" ✓. Ask: "Какой сегодня день?".
Examples
- Какой сегодня день? — Сегодня среда.What day is it today? — Today is Wednesday.
- Я работаю в понедельник и в четверг.I work on Monday and Thursday.
- Завтра пятница. Выходные!Tomorrow is Friday. The weekend!
- В субботу и в воскресенье — выходные.Saturday and Sunday are the weekend.

Читаем дни недели— Reading the Day Names
The day names drill important rules. "Четверг": the final "г" is devoiced and sounds like "k" — "chitvérk". "Среда": stress on the end (sre-DÁ), unstressed "е" → "i". "Пятница": "я" = "ya", and "ц" = "ts" (pyat-ni-tsa). "В субботу": two "б" together — "subbota". Read the days below aloud, watching stress and devoicing.
