Nationality: use "khon" + country name — khon thai, khon ameerikaa, khon yîipùn. Ask with "pen…mǎi": Khun pen khon thai mǎi. Answer châi / mâi châi. Nationality: khon + country + ไหม
Explanation
State nationality with "khon" (person) + country: khon thai (Thai), khon ameerikaa (American), khon yîipùn (Japanese). Use "pen" to link it to the subject (pen = role/state): Phǒm pen khon ameerikaa. Make a yes/no question with "mǎi" at the end: Khun pen khon thai mǎi. Answer briefly with "châi" (yes) or "mâi châi" (no). Never forget ครับ/ค่ะ at the end.

การไหว้ และ ครับ/ค่ะThe wai & ครับ/ค่ะ
Two things mark you as polite in Thailand from the first second: the wai (palms-together greeting) and ending your sentences with "ครับ" or "ค่ะ".
The wai
Palms together, a slight bow of the head. The higher your hands and the lower your head, the more respect. Wai monks and elders higher; for peers, a light wai at chest height.
Who wais first
The younger or lower-status person initiates; you return a wai from someone senior but do not out-wai a monk or elder. Do not wai children or service staff — a smile is enough.
ครับ / ค่ะ end everything
Men end with "ครับ", women with "ค่ะ" (statements) or "คะ" (questions). They are not optional — leaving them off sounds curt. Self-reference is gendered too: men say "ผม", women "ดิฉัน/ฉัน".
When unsure: return any wai you receive, keep your hands no higher than the other person's, and end every sentence with ครับ/ค่ะ — that covers nearly all first encounters.

Tone rules for dead syllables:
- mid/high + deadLOW toneจาก (càak) = from; หก (hòk) = six
- low + dead + short vowelHIGH toneนัก (nák) in นักเรียน = high
- low + dead + long vowelFALLING toneชอบ (chɔ̂ɔp) = to like — falling
