Rất vui được gặp bạnVery glad to meet you

Final chapter: put it all together. Greetings, introductions, asking age, counting with classifiers, pointing at objects (cái này / cái kia), asking location (ở đâu) — all in one conversation. Social phrases: "Rất vui được gặp bạn", "Hẹn gặp lại". New words: rất vui, lại, nữa, mọi người, hiểu, nói chuyện, hẹn gặp lại, vui vẻ, chúc, thương. Culture corner: Saving face & the indirect no. Tone corner: a tone checkpoint — read at natural speed, with the contour curves gone.

Putting it all together

Explanation

No new grammar — this chapter links every piece of Book 1. Remember the skeleton: (1) là joins two nouns ("Tôi là sinh viên"), but is dropped before an adjective ("Cái này đẹp"). (2) Question words stay in place: gì, ai, nào, đâu, mấy — they don't move to the front. (3) Counting needs a classifier: number + classifier + noun ("hai con mèo"). (4) Pointing at objects: cái này / cái kia + gì. (5) Asking location: noun + ở + đâu. (6) Running through all of it: pick the right address term by age and gender (anh / chị / em / cô). One conversation strings them together: greet → ask name → ask age → count → point at objects → ask the way.

Examples

  • Chào bạn! Bạn tên là gì?Hello! What's your name?
  • Bạn bao nhiêu tuổi? — Tôi hai mươi tuổi.How old are you? — I'm twenty.
  • Cái này là cái gì? — Cái này là máy tính.What's this? — This is a computer.
  • Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? — Ở kia.Where's the toilet? — Over there.

Giữ thể diệnSaving face & the indirect no

A flat "no" can feel harsh in Vietnamese culture. People soften it, smile, and leave room — protecting everyone's thể diện (face).

Avoiding the blunt no

Instead of just saying "không" (no), Vietnamese people often say "để mình xem" (let me see), "khó đấy" (that's tricky), or smile and change the subject. These usually mean no.

Smiling through discomfort

A smile can signal embarrassment or "I'd rather not", not happiness. Don't read every smile as agreement. Compliments are also gently deflected ("không đâu" — not at all) — accepting praise outright can seem boastful.

Indirectness is kindness

Leaving a graceful exit for the other person is considerate, not evasive. Pushing for a hard "yes" or "no" can make the other person lose face. Protecting face on both sides is the polite way to behave.

When unsure: soften your own refusals ("để mình xem nhé"), don't force a direct answer, and treat a smile-plus-hesitation as a polite no.
