Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 43
Bạn đã từng đến Việt Nam chưa?Have you ever been to Vietnam?
We talk about travel and experiences. Vocabulary: chuyến đi, nước ngoài, bãi biển, máy bay, hộ chiếu, va li, quà lưu niệm, khách sạn, đảo, nghỉ, trải nghiệm, thăm. Key grammar: "đã từng + verb" to talk about a life experience (whether you have ever done something): "Tôi đã từng đến Việt Nam" (I have been to Vietnam). In ch34 you learned "đã" for the past; "từng" adds the meaning "at some point in life". Question: "... đã từng ... chưa?". Negative: "chưa từng ..." (have never). Note: "đã đi" = went (one specific time), while "đã từng đi" = have (ever) gone (a lifetime experience). English speakers tend to drop "từng": "Bạn đã ăn phở chưa?" (have you eaten yet, today?) → to ask about lifetime experience, add "từng": "Bạn đã từng ăn phở chưa?" ✓. Tone corner: "từng" (huyền) and "đã" (ngã).

Experience: "đã từng + verb"
Explanation
In ch34 you learned "đã + verb" for the past: "Tôi đã đi Hà Nội" (went, one specific time). To talk about a life EXPERIENCE — having done something at least once — add "từng": "đã từng + verb". "Tôi đã từng đến Việt Nam" = at some point in my life I have been to Vietnam. The question uses "chưa" at the end: "Bạn đã từng đi máy bay chưa?" (have you ever?). The negative is "chưa từng + verb" = have never: "Tôi chưa từng đi nước ngoài". The difference: "đã đi" states ONE specific past time; "đã từng đi" states WHETHER you have that experience in life. Note: English speakers often forget "từng" and say only "đã", so the sentence becomes "đã đi ... chưa?" (have you gone yet, today?). To ask about a lifetime experience, add "từng": "Bạn đã từng ... chưa?" ✓.
Examples
- Tôi đã từng đến Việt Nam.I have been to Vietnam.
- Bạn đã từng đi máy bay chưa?Have you ever been on a plane?
- Tôi đã từng ở khách sạn đó.I have stayed at that hotel.
- Chúng tôi chưa từng đi nước ngoài.We have never been abroad.
- Anh ấy đã từng thăm đảo Phú Quốc.He has visited Phu Quoc island.
