Grammar
颜色:「ist rot」vs「ein rotes Hemd」
Explanation
Examples
- Das Hemd ist rot.
- Ich möchte ein rotes Hemd.
- Die Schuhe sind blau.
- Ich brauche eine blaue Hose.

Bargeld, Pfand und der Supermarkt
Germany loves cash more than most neighbouring countries. In many bakeries, at market stalls and in small cafés it is: „Nur Bargeld“ (Cash only). The EC card (Girocard) is taken more and more often, but credit cards not everywhere. A tip: always have a few coins and small notes with you. When paying, they ask: „Zahlen Sie bar oder mit Karte?“ (Are you paying cash or by card?).
On many bottles and cans you pay a small amount extra — the „Pfand“ (deposit, often 25 cents). You get the money back when you bring the empty bottle to the „Pfandautomat“ (return machine) in the supermarket. The machine counts the bottles and prints a receipt; you hand it in at the till or offset it against your shopping. That way almost nothing is thrown away. So never throw a deposit bottle in the bin — it is worth hard cash!
At the checkout it moves fast: the cashier scans the goods briskly, and you bag them yourself — ideally in your own bag, because bags cost extra. So bring a bag. And one more thing: on Sundays almost all shops are closed (only bakeries and petrol stations are open). If you want to cook at the weekend, you shop on Saturday. When leaving, you say a friendly „Tschüss“ or „Schönen Tag noch“ (Have a nice day).
