Indonesian · BIPA 1 (A1) · Chapter 13
Ini apa?What's this?
Ask the name of a thing with "apa" (it stays in place): Ini apa? Itu apa? Answer: Ini jam. Use "ini" for what is near, "itu" for what is far. Don't slip "adalah" into the question — "Ini apa?", not "Ini adalah apa?". New vocabulary: jam, payung, baju, sepatu, air, pintu, jendela, komputer, uang, kertas, kunci, hp.

apa + objects
Explanation
"apa" = "what" and stays in place (in situ) — it doesn't have to move to the front. Ask the name of a thing: "Ini apa?" (ini + apa = "this what?"), "Itu apa?". Answer without "adalah": "Ini jam.", "Itu payung." Use "ini" for a near thing, "itu" for a far one (learned in ch3-4). Two key points: (1) don't slip "adalah" into the question — "Ini apa?", not "Ini adalah apa?"; (2) pick ini/itu by distance.
Examples
- Ini apa? — Ini jam.What's this? — It's a clock.
- Itu apa? — Itu payung.What's that? — It's an umbrella.
- Ini komputer.This is a computer.
- Itu jendela.That is a window.
