Verb-predicate sentences + 喜欢 / 想 / 要
Explanation
Verb-predicate sentence: Subject + V + Object. 我吃饭 (I eat); 我喝水 (I drink water); 我去中国 (I go to China). Different from 是 sentence (是 LINKS); V sentence has V + O directly. Negate with 不: 我不吃 (I don't eat). 喜欢 / 想 / 要 all express liking/wanting: (1) 喜欢 + V/N = "to like." 我喜欢吃中国菜. (2) 想 + V = "would like to" — softer. 我想喝水. (3) 要 + V/N = "will / want" — stronger. 我要饭. THREE TONES: 喜欢 = ongoing preference; 想 = current wish (soft); 要 = clear intent (firm).
Examples
- 我喜欢吃中国菜.I like eating Chinese food.
- 我想喝茶.I would like to drink tea.
- 我要米饭.I want rice.
- 你吃什么?What are you eating?

中国人问多大How Chinese people ask "how old"
In the West, asking someone's age can feel rude. In China, it's friendly — not impolite. It's how Chinese people figure out how to address you (older / younger sibling, or uncle / auntie).
几岁 vs 多大?
Different forms by age: (1) Children: 几岁? (literally 'how many years?') — because answers are small (3, 5, 7). (2) Adults: 多大? ('how big?') — neutral, friendly. (3) Elders: 多大年纪? — more formal and respectful.
Wanting to know your age
Chinese culture uses relationship terms (哥哥, 姐姐, 叔叔, 阿姨) heavily. They all depend on age. Your friend's mom is 阿姨; their dad is 叔叔. Without knowing the age, you don't know what to call them.
Older or younger brother?
In Chinese, 'brother' splits into 哥哥 (older) and 弟弟 (younger) — never just 'brother.' When a friend says 我哥哥 or 我弟弟, you immediately know who's older. This may be the foundation of Chinese family relationships.
Next time a Chinese friend asks 多大?, don't be surprised — it's a friendly opener, not a rude question.
