हो or छ: what it is, or what it is like
Explanation
हो says what something is: यो चिया हो "this is tea". छ says what it is like, or where it is: चिया तातो छ "the tea is hot". So it is not चिया तातो हो but चिया तातो छ. Describing words such as तातो "hot", चिसो "cold" and मीठो "tasty" take छ.
Examples
- यो चिया हो।This is tea.
- चिया तातो छ।The tea is hot.
- चिया मीठो छ।The tea is tasty.
- किताब कालो छ।The book is black.

कस्तो छ? "what is it like?" and छैन "isn't"
Explanation
कस्तो means "how, what … like". The answer to कस्तो छ? is a describing word with छ: तातो छ "it's hot". The negative of छ is छैन: तातो छैन "it isn't hot". होइन goes with हो; छैन goes with छ.
Examples
- चियाकस्तोछ?How's the tea?
- तातो छ।It's hot.
- मेरोचियातातोछैन।My tea isn't hot.
- चिसो छैन।It isn't cold.
