नमस्ते कहिले भन्ने?When do you say namaste?
In Nepal, नमस्ते is said both when people meet and when they part. One word does a lot of work.
Meeting and parting
नमस्ते does the work of "good morning", "good night" and "goodbye" — all of them.
नमस्कार is another form. It shows a little more respect, and it is heard less often.
With the hands together
Namaste is usually said with a slight bow and the hands pressed together: palms touching, fingers pointing up, thumbs close to the chest.
The word comes from Sanskrit: namas + te, "to you".
हजुर and जी
When someone calls you, the polite reply is हजुर. Said with a rising voice, it means "pardon?".
जी after a name shows respect: अनिता जी, माइक जी.
