Portuguese · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 19
No restauranteAt the restaurant
Meals and ordering at a restaurant. Here the regular -er/-ir verbs appear: comer (eu como, você come) and beber (eu bebo, você bebe) — conjugated like the -ar ones but with "e" in the endings. To order you use "querer" (eu quero, você quer): Eu quero o cardápio. The meals: café da manhã (breakfast), almoço (lunch), jantar (dinner). New vocabulary: comida, café da manhã, almoço, jantar, comer, beber, restaurante, garçom, cardápio, conta.

-er/-ir verbs and "quero"
Explanation
You already know the -ar verbs (trabalho, estuda). The -er/-ir verbs conjugate the same, but with "e/i" in the endings: comer → eu como, você come, nós comemos; beber → eu bebo, você bebe. (-ir is nearly the same: abrir → eu abro, você abre.) The 1st person (eu) always ends in "-o": eu como, eu bebo. To order you use "querer" (irregular): eu quero, você quer, nós queremos. The English mistake is to say "eu quer" — the "eu" form is "quero". Phrases: Eu quero o cardápio. O que você quer comer? A conta, por favor.
Examples
- Eu quero o cardápio, por favor.I want the menu, please.
- O que você quer comer? — Quero o almoço.What do you want to eat? — I want lunch.
