Italian · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 24
Abito a RomaI live in Rome
The chapter of places: how to say WHERE you are and WHERE you are going. The golden rule is small and iron-clad: a + city (a Roma, a Napoli), in + country or region (in Italia, in Toscana). And the same pair serves for going: Vado a Roma. Vado in Italia. The bonus trick: means of transport travel with article-less in — in treno, in autobus — the in centro family grows again. Mike says «sono in Roma»… and the chapter puts him back on the right road. At the end, the sounds lesson on intonation: the Italian question is a sentence that rises.

- MikeGiulia, sono felice: sono in Roma!Giulia, I'm happy: I am «in Roma»! (One all-purpose in for every place — the slip this chapter fixes; felice «happy», glossed.)

- GiuliaPerfetto! E domani andiamo a Napoli — in treno!Perfect! And tomorrow we're going to Naples — by train! (in treno — transport rides article-less in, the idiom family again.)

- MarcoA Napoli! La mia città! Il treno va dalla stazione — e a Napoli, l'autobus va in centro. To Naples! My city! The train goes from the station — and in Naples, the bus goes downtown. (dalla — another merged preposition, glossed; chapter 25 opens the whole family.)
- GiuliaE dalla stazione all'albergo? In autobus o… a piedi? And from the station to the hotel? By bus or… on foot? (a piedi — feet travel with a, another frozen pair; albergo «hotel», the attested CILS word.)

A Roma, in Italia — the map of places
Explanation
The map has two main roads. Road A, for CITIES: a Roma, a Napoli, a Bologna — both for being (Abito a Roma) and for going (Vado a Roma): the same preposition does both jobs, it is the verb that changes. Road IN, for COUNTRIES and regions: in Italia, in Toscana — and note that after in the country loses its article (l'Italia è bella, BUT in Italia). Then there are the boxes you have already collected, all consistent with the map: al bar and alla stazione (a + article, next chapter's mechanism), a casa and a piedi (a's family, article-less), in centro, in treno, in autobus, in contanti (in's family, article-less). There is no deep logic — there is habit, and habit trains: city→a, country→in, transport→in, idiom→as it was born. With this map and chapter 19's andare, all of Italy is reachable: Vado a Napoli in treno, e dalla stazione vado a piedi.
Examples
- Abito a Roma. Vado a Napoli.cities take a — for staying AND going; the verb does the moving
- L'Italia è bella — ma: Vivo in Italia.the country wears its article as subject and sheds it after in
- in treno, in autobus — a pieditransport with in, feet with a — both article-less, both frozen
- Vado a Napoli in treno, e dalla stazione vado a piedi.the whole map in one itinerary — city, transport, feet (dalla previews chapter 25)

Intonation: the question that rises
Explanation
You have known it since chapter 14: the Italian yes/no question is IDENTICAL to the statement — no word moves, nothing is added. All the work is done by the VOICE. Today you train it. The normal sentence falls at the end: Sei di Napoli. ↘ The question rises: Sei di Napoli? ↗ — the rise starts on the last word and peaks on the last stressed syllable. Try the pair out loud: Vai a Roma. ↘ / Vai a Roma? ↗ — same mouth, opposite melody. Questions with a question word instead FALL like statements: Dove vai? ↘ Quanto costa? ↘ — the question word has already announced the question, the voice need not repeat it. And the third profile, the exclamation: starts high and falls with force — Che bello! Buonissimo! Three melodies, three meanings: rise to ask, fall to state, start high to exclaim. The Italian ear hears the punctuation — and from today, so does yours.
Examples
- Sei di Napoli. ↘ — Sei di Napoli? ↗same words, opposite melody: the rise IS the question mark
- Dove vai? ↘ — Quanto costa? ↘wh-questions fall: the question word already did the announcing
- Che bello! Buonissimo! ↘the exclamation: start high, land hard — enthusiasm has its own melody
- Vai a Roma. / Vai a Roma? / Vai a Roma!one sentence, three melodies, three meanings — record yourself and compare
