Food and taste. Products: мясо, рыба, овощи, фрукт, хлеб. The key: the ADJECTIVE agrees in gender with the noun. "Вкусный" changes its ending: вкуснЫЙ суп (m.), вкуснАЯ рыба (f.), вкуснОЕ мясо (n.), вкуснЫЕ овощи (pl.). English speakers don't change the ending: "вкусный рыба" ✗ → "вкусная рыба" ✓. "Я хочу есть" = I'm hungry (lit. "I want to eat"). "Я голоден" (m.) / "Я голодна" (f.). New words: еда, мясо, рыба, овощи, фрукт, хлеб, вкусный, голодный, пить, есть. Explanation
The adjective agrees with the noun in GENDER. "Вкусный" has forms: вкуснЫЙ (m.: вкусный суп, хлеб), вкуснАЯ (f.: вкусная рыба, еда), вкуснОЕ (n.: вкусное мясо), вкуснЫЕ (pl.: вкусные овощи). The adjective goes BEFORE the noun. English speakers don't change the ending: "вкусный рыба" ✗ → "вкусная рыба" ✓. To just say "delicious" without gender — the short form: "Это вкусно", "Очень вкусно". "Я хочу есть" = "I'm hungry" (lit. "I want to eat"); also "Я голоден" (m.) / "Я голодна" (f.).

Food and drink in Russia are about people, not only taste. A glass of tea, a cramped kitchen and a generous host will tell you more about Russian culture than any restaurant. At the heart of it all is hospitality.
Tea
Tea is drunk at any time of day, and especially in the evening. Water used to be boiled in a samovar; today more often in a kettle, but the tradition of "sitting down to tea" remains. With tea they serve jam, biscuits, sweets, dried bread rings (sushki) or cake. "To have tea" (vypit' chayu) is not just a drink but a reason to sit and talk. As a guest you will almost certainly be offered tea — accept it, it is a sign of friendship.
The kitchen table
In Russia the most important conversations often happen in the kitchen, at the table, not in the living room. The kitchen is a warm, cramped, "own" place. Here friends sit late into the night over tea, discussing life, politics, books. "Talking in the kitchen" is a whole cultural tradition, especially from Soviet times, when the kitchen was the place for frank conversation. If the host invites you into the kitchen rather than the formal room, it is a sign of closeness and trust.
Hospitality
Russian hospitality is generous and insistent. A guest will always be fed — the table groans with food, even if the hosts are not rich. The host says "Ugoshchaytes'!" (Help yourself!) and keeps piling food onto your plate. Refusing is hard: one "no" is not enough, they will urge you. If you are full, say with a smile "Spasibo, vsyo ochen' vkusno, ya naelsya" (Thank you, it's all very delicious, I'm full). You don't arrive empty-handed — bring a cake, sweets or flowers. And at the door you take off your shoes: the hosts will give you slippers.
In short: accept the tea, sit down at the kitchen table, and don't be surprised by the hosts' generosity. In Russia, food is a way of saying "I'm glad you're here". Enjoy your meal — ugoshchaytes'!
