Explanation

A 的 B = "A's B" / "B of A." 我的书 ("my book"); 中国的菜 ("Chinese food"). Same for locations: 桌子的旁边 = 桌子旁边. In fixed compounds, 的 can drop: 我妈妈 / 中国朋友 are also fine.
