Giving and asking for directions. Vocabulary: à droite, à gauche, en face, derrière, entre, le coin, tourner, tout droit, au bout, traverser. Key point: position prepositions take « de » — à côté DE, en face DE, près DE, loin DE, au bout DE — and « de » combines with the article: de+le = DU, de+les = DES (but de+la stays « de la », de+l' stays « de l' »): « à côté du parc », « en face de la banque ». English speakers say « à côté de le parc » ✗ → « à côté du parc » ✓. For sides: « à droite », « à gauche », « tourner à droite ».

Position prepositions: de+le = du

Explanation

Almost all position prepositions end in « de »: à côté DE, en face DE, près DE, loin DE, au bout DE. The « de » combines with the following article: de+le = du, de+les = des (but de+la stays « de la », de+l' stays « de l' »). You say « à côté DU parc » (de+le), « en face DE LA banque » (de la), « au bout DE L'avenue ». English speakers leave the words apart: « à côté de le parc » ✗ → « à côté du parc » ✓. « Derrière » and « entre » have no « de »: « derrière la gare », « entre la banque et l'école ». For sides you say « à droite », « à gauche », « tourner à droite », « tout droit ». To ask: « Où est…? », « C'est loin? » (Is it far?), « Tournez au coin » (Turn at the corner).

  • La banque est à côté du parc.The bank is next to the park.
  • La pharmacie est en face de l'école.The pharmacy is opposite the school.
  • Tournez à droite au coin.Turn right at the corner.
  • L'hôpital est entre la banque et la gare.The hospital is between the bank and the station.
