Explanation

The numbers 1 to 10: один, два, три, четыре, пять, шесть, семь, восемь, девять, десять. For now use them as-is, to count and to give a number. The question word какой means "which / what kind" and agrees in gender like an adjective: какой номер (m), какая семья (f), какое имя (n). "Какой у тебя номер?" asks for a specific number. Compare with что (ch13), which asks "what thing is this".

Числа и мягкий знак— Numbers and the soft sign

Today we read the numbers. Many end in the soft sign ь, which softens the consonant: пять = "pyat" (soft т), шесть, восемь, десять. It is not "pat" or "shest" — the end is soft. Also: in один the unstressed о → "a" — "a-DEEN", and in четыре the unstressed е is lighter. Count aloud from one to ten, listening for the soft endings. Trust your ear.
