Italian · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 26

Ha i capelli neriShe has black hair

Describing people splits the work between your two engines: essere for character and traits (è simpatica, è gentile, è stanco), avere for body features — WITH the article: ha i capelli neri, ha gli occhi verdi. It is chapter 6's team returning: years are had, and so is hair. Chapter 23's colors find their second job, and Mike tries to «be black hair»… with the results you can imagine.

Com'è Anna?— What does Anna look like?

Mike, my friend Anna is arriving at the bar but I'm running late. What is she like? She is tall and very nice. (com'è «what is she like» — the describing question; in ritardo «late», glossed; essere carries traits: alta, simpatica.)
  2. MikeMa come la trovo? È capelli neri? But how do I find her? She is black hair? (THE SLIP: body features are not something you ARE — «È capelli neri» tries to make hair a trait of essere. Italian HAS features, with the article. la trovo «I find her», glossed.)
  3. GiuliaQuasi! She HAS black hair — long — and has green eyes. Character you ARE, hair you HAVE! (The fix: avere + article for features — ha i capelli neri, ha gli occhi verdi. Like the years in chapter 6: Italian owns its hair too. quasi «almost», glossed.)
  4. MikeCapito: è simpatica, ha i capelli neri. Come i 25 anni: li ho, non li sono!Got it: she IS nice, she HAS black hair. Like the 25 years: I have them, I am not them! (Mike builds the rule on his own chapter-6 slip — the essere/avere split is one system: traits are, features and years are had. li «them», glossed preview.)

La foto di famiglia— The family photo

  1. MarcoChe bella foto! What a lovely photo! Who is this lady? She has white hair and dark eyes. (che bella foto — the che + adjective exclamation, receptive; the describing kit at work: avere + article + color.)
  2. GiuliaÈ mia nonna Elena. È molto gentile — e un po' severa! Accanto c'è mio padre: è alto e ha gli occhi verdi, come me.That's my grandmother Elena. She is very kind — and a bit strict! Next to her is my father: he is tall and has green eyes, like me. (severa «strict», glossed; the split runs the whole line — essere gentile/alto, avere gli occhi; mia nonna bare per the family rule, chapter 9.)
  3. MarcoE questo cane con gli occhi grandi? È stanco o è triste? And this dog with the big eyes? Is he tired or sad? (con gli occhi grandi — describing with con «with»; stanco «tired» — today's states ride essere too; triste glossed, its chapter is 38.)
That's Ulisse! He is not sad — he is tired: on Sundays he runs a lot. But he is always happy. (Ulisse from chapter 9 returns; la domenica — the habitual article from chapter 17; corre «he runs», glossed; contento closes the trait set.)

Essere or avere? Describing people

Explanation

Two engines, two jobs. ESSERE carries character, states, and whole-person measures: è simpatica, è gentile, è alto, è stanco, è contento. AVERE carries the parts and the numbers: ha i capelli neri, ha gli occhi verdi, ha 25 anni. Note the article: with avere, body parts ALWAYS arrive with their article — ha I capelli lunghi, ha GLI occhi grandi — never bare. And the adjective agrees with the part, not the person: Anna ha i capelli nerI (neri with capelli, not nera with Anna). The question for all of it is Com'è? — «com'è Anna?» asks character and looks at once. If your language describes with a single verb, the pair looks like a luxury: the test is to ask «am I talking about the whole person or a part?» — whole person → essere, part → avere with the article.

Examples

  • Anna è alta e molto simpatica.Anna is tall and very nice. (Whole person → essere; both adjectives agree with Anna: alta, simpatica.)
Anna has black hair and green eyes. (Parts → avere, each with its article; neri agrees with capelli, verdi with occhi — not with Anna.)
  • Com'è tuo fratello? — È giovane, ha i capelli corti. What is your brother like? — He is young, he has short hair. (One question, both engines in the answer; tuo fratello bare — the family-singular rule from chapter 9.)
  • Oggi sono stanco ma sono contento.Today I am tired but I am happy. (States of the moment stay with essere — tired and happy are things you are, not things you have.)
