Đây là ai?Who is this?

The question word ai (who) — in place, like every Vietnamese question word. Adjectives are predicates with NO "là": Nhà này to (This house [is] big), Bạn tôi rất tốt. Intensify with rất (before the adjective). Vocabulary: ai, to like, to know, to speak, and the adjectives good, beautiful, big, small, new, old. Tone corner: ai (ngang) vs ái, and the tones on the adjectives.

ai (who) + adjective-as-predicate

Explanation

ai means "who", and like every Vietnamese question word it stays in place: Đây là ai? (đây = subject, ai = predicate). The key point: an adjective predicate needs NO "là". Say Gia đình này to (this family [is] big), NOT Gia đình này là to. "là" is only used before a noun. To intensify, put rất BEFORE the adjective: Bạn tôi rất tốt.

Examples

  • Đây là ai?Who is this?
  • Gia đình này to.This family is big. (no là before the adjective)
  • Bạn tôi rất tốt.My friend is very good.
