Di restoranAt the restaurant

Ordering food. The key point: Indonesian has NO plural ending "-s". Number alone shows quantity: "dua kopi" (two coffees), not "dua kopis". English speakers often add the English "-s". For a container/portion, use the prefix "se-" (= one): segelas air (a glass of water), secangkir kopi (a cup of coffee), sepiring nasi (a plate of rice). Order: "Saya pesan…", "Boleh minta…", "…, tolong". New words: restoran, warung, menu, memesan, nasi, ayam, gelas, piring, cangkir, air.

No plural "-s"; number + noun

Explanation

Indonesian does NOT use a plural ending "-s". A noun stays the same for one or many; quantity is shown by the NUMBER: satu kopi, dua kopi, tiga kopi (not "kopis"). English speakers often add the English "-s" — "dua kopis" ✗ → "dua kopi" ✓. To name a container or portion, use the attached prefix "se-" (= one): segelas air (one glass of water), secangkir kopi, sepiring nasi. Order politely: "Saya pesan…", "Boleh minta…", or add "tolong" at the end: "Dua kopi, tolong".

Examples

  • Boleh minta menu?May I have the menu?
  • Saya pesan nasi ayam.I order chicken rice.
  • Dua kopi, tolong. Two coffees, please.
  • Saya mau segelas air.I want a glass of water.
