Age: कति वर्ष भयो?

Explanation

To ask someone's age, Nepali says कति वर्ष भयो?, literally "how many years has it become?". The verb changes with the person: for तपाईं and उहाँ it is हुनुभयो; for म it is भएँ; for anyone else, such as Suman or मेरो छोरा, it is भयो. तपाईं कति वर्ष हुनुभयो? "how old are you?" — म पच्चीस वर्ष भएँ "I'm twenty-five". सुमन अठार वर्ष भयो "Suman is eighteen".

Numbers for ages: अठार … सत्तरी

Explanation

In Nepali every number up to 99 has its own word, so you learn them one by one as you need them: अठार 18, पच्चीस 25. The tens: बीस, तीस, चालीस, पचास (chapter 11), साठी 60, सत्तरी 70. In an age, वर्ष comes after the number: पच्चीस वर्ष "twenty-five years", सत्तरी वर्ष "seventy years".

This chapter taught age and वर्ष, and chapter 17 the days of the week. Nepal has a calendar of its own.

Bikram Sambat

Bikram Sambat, विक्रम संवत्, is an official calendar of Nepal. Its year count is usually 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, and 56 from January to mid-April.

The new year

The Nepali new year is the first day of Baisakh, बैशाख, usually around 13 to 15 April. Chait, चैत, is the last month of the year.

Saturday off

In Nepal the weekly day off is Saturday. The working week runs from आइतबार (Sunday) to शुक्रबार (Friday), and schools are off on Saturdays too. That is why Suman plays soccer on शनिबार.
