English · CEFR Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 22

Prices and paying Preise und Bezahlen

Nach Preisen fragen und bezahlen: price, dollar, cent, expensive, cheap, how much, pay, cash, card. How much is these bags?" ✗ → „How much are these bags?" ✓. Aussprache-Ecke: „dollar", das „ch" von cheap und die Betonung in expensive.

is or are? — is oder are?

  1. Emma Minsu, do you want to buy these bags? Minsu, möchtest du diese Taschen kaufen?
  2. Minsu Yes. How much is these bags? Ja. Wie viel kosten diese Taschen? (Patzer: these bags ist Plural — nimm „are" → „How much are these bags?")
  3. Emma "These bags" is plural — use "are": How much are these bags? „These bags" ist Plural — nimm „are": How much are these bags?
  4. Minsu How much are these bags? Wie viel kosten diese Taschen?

At the shop — Im Geschäft

  1. Minsu Hello. How much is this bag? Hallo. Wie viel kostet diese Tasche?
  2. Assistant It's fifteen dollars. Fünfzehn Dollar.
  3. Minsu That's cheap. I want to pay by card. Das ist billig. Ich möchte mit Karte bezahlen.
  4. Assistant Sure. Here you are. Klar. Bitte schön.

"How much is …?" and "How much are …?" „How much is …?" und „How much are …?"

To ask a price, say "How much" + is / are + the thing. Use IS for one thing: How much is this bag? — It's ten dollars. Use ARE for two or more: How much are these apples? — They're four dollars. The verb must match: one → is, many → are. It is the same rule as "this is / these are". To answer, use a price with "dollars": It's five dollars. To say how you pay: I want to pay by card / with cash. Korean keeps one form of the verb for any number, so watch the plural — with "these bags" you must say ARE, not is.

Um einen Preis zu fragen, sag „How much" + is / are + die Sache. Nimm IS für eine Sache: How much is this bag? — It's ten dollars. Nimm ARE für zwei oder mehr: How much are these apples? — They're four dollars. Das Verb muss passen: eins → is, mehrere → are. Es ist dieselbe Regel wie „this is / these are". Antworte mit einem Preis in „dollars": It's five dollars. Sag, wie du zahlst: I want to pay by card / with cash. Koreanisch nutzt eine Verbform für jede Zahl, also achte auf den Plural — bei „these bags" musst du ARE sagen, nicht is.

  • How much is this? — It's ten dollars. Wie viel kostet das? — Zehn Dollar.
  • How much are these apples? — They're four dollars. Wie viel kosten diese Äpfel? — Vier Dollar.
  • This bag is expensive. These bags are cheap. Diese Tasche ist teuer. Diese Taschen sind billig.
  • I want to pay by card. Ich möchte mit Karte bezahlen.
