ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักPleased to meet you

yindii thîi dâai rúucàk

Final chapter: put it all together. Greetings, introductions, asking age, counting with classifiers, pointing at objects (nîi àrai), asking location (yùu thîinǎi) — all in one conversation. Social phrases: "yindii thîi dâai rúucàk", "lɛ́ɛw cəə kan". New words: yindii thîi dâai rúucàk, ìik, dûaikan, thúkkhon, khâocai, khui, phóp, wǎŋ, lɛ́ɛw cəə kan, sanùk. Culture corner: greng jai. Reading corner: a reading checkpoint — the synthesis dialogue with no romanization.

Putting it all together

Explanation

No new grammar — this chapter threads every piece together. The core frames: (1) pen for role/nationality, khʉʉ for definitions (A khʉʉ B); drop "pen" before an adjective (nîi dii). (2) Question words stay in place: àrai, khrai, thîinǎi, thâorài, kìi — they don't move to the front. (3) Counting: noun + number + classifier (mɛɛo sɔ̌ɔŋ tua). (4) Location: noun + yùu + thîinǎi. (5) End sentences with kráp (male) / khâ (female) for politeness. (6) Choose the address term by age: phîi/nɔ́ɔŋ/khun. One conversation threads them all: greet → ask name → ask age → count → point at objects → ask the way.

Examples

  • สวัสดีครับ คุณชื่ออะไรครับHello! What's your name?
  • คุณอายุเท่าไหร่ครับ — ผมอายุยี่สิบเอ็ดปีHow old are you? — I'm twenty-one.
  • นี่อะไรครับ — นี่คือคอมพิวเตอร์What's this? — It's a computer.
  • ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนครับ — อยู่ที่นั่นWhere's the toilet? — Over there.

เกรงใจGreng jai — consideration that softens everything

greng jai is the Thai instinct not to impose, inconvenience, or embarrass others. It quietly shapes how Thais ask, refuse, and disagree.

Not wanting to impose

A Thai may not ask for help, say they are hungry, or correct your words — out of greng jai. They read your greng jai too, so an offer is often declined the first time out of politeness — offer again.

The soft no

Thais avoid a direct no. "mâi pen rai" (it's fine / never mind), a smile, or a vague answer can mean no. Pushing for a clear answer makes people uncomfortable.

Save face and keep cool

Avoid criticising or embarrassing anyone in front of others, and try to "jai yen" (keep a cool heart). Getting angry or raising your voice makes YOU look bad, not them. A Thai smile has many meanings — pleasure, apology, embarrassment, or smoothing over — don't read every smile as agreement.

When unsure: stay calm and gentle, offer things twice, don't force a too-direct yes/no, and never raise your voice — greng jai rewards softness.
