ねだんと かいけいPrices and paying

Nedan to kaikei

Price words: nedan, en, takai, yasui, ikura, harau, genkin, kaado, reji, otsuri. The key grammar is "ikura desu ka" and the reply "~en desu". Always add "en" after the number: hyaku en, sen en. English speakers make the mistake of forgetting "en" and saying "hyaku desu" — with the number, say "hyaku en desu". Kana corner: pronouncing the price words.

Asking a price: "ikura desu ka"

Explanation

To ask a price, say "~ wa ikura desu ka": kore wa ikura desu ka. The answer is "number + en + desu": hyaku en desu, sen en desu. "En" is the money unit and always follows the number. Takai and yasui are i-adjectives, so they take "desu" directly: takai desu, yasui desu. English speakers make the mistake of forgetting "en" and saying "hyaku desu" — always say "hyaku en desu".
