かいものShopping

Kaimono

Shopping words: mise, ichiba, depaato, suupaa, kau, uru, mono, okyakusan, ten'in, fukuro. The key grammar is "~tai desu" (things you want to do): kaitai desu, tabetai desu. Attach "tai" to the pre-masu stem of the verb: kaimasu → kaitai. English speakers make the mistake of attaching "tai" to the dictionary form and saying "kau tai desu" — attach it to the masu-stem: kaitai desu. Kana corner: pronouncing the shopping words.

What you want to do: verb + "~tai desu"

Explanation

To say what you want to do, attach "tai" to the pre-masu stem. kaimasu → kai + tai = kaitai desu. tabemasu → tabetai desu. nomimasu → nomitai desu. With "nani o kaitai desu ka" you can ask what someone wants to buy. Keep the "o" as usual. English speakers make the mistake of attaching "tai" to the dictionary form (kau) and saying "kau tai desu" — always attach it to the masu-stem (kai): kaitai desu.

Examples

  • なにを かいたいですか。What do you want to buy?
