Russian · TORFL Band 1 (A1) · Chapter 14
Где туалет?Where is the toilet?
To ask where something is: "Где туалет?" — again with NO verb (not "где есть туалет"). You answer with place adverbs: тут (here), там, вон там, рядом, близко, далеко. "Где туалет? — Вон там". The prepositions "на, под, в" (на столе, под стулом) you'll also recognise, but the full forms with a case are Book 2; for now answer with adverbs. New words: где, тут, вон там, туалет, на, под, в, рядом, далеко, близко. Reading: the "г" in "где" is hard; "рядом" starts with "r", not "p".

"где" + location (adverbs)
Explanation
"Где" = "where". You ask with NO verb: "Где туалет?", "Где Анна?". And you answer briefly, with place adverbs: тут/здесь (here), там (there), вон там (over there), рядом (nearby), близко (close), далеко (far). "Где туалет? — Вон там". "Аня далеко? — Нет, рядом". The prepositions "на" (on), "под" (under), "в" (in) you will recognise (на столе, под стулом, в сумке), BUT after them the noun changes form (the prepositional case) — that's Book 2. In Book 1, adverbs are enough for the answer. Don't insert "есть": "Где туалет?", not "Где есть туалет?".
Examples
- Где туалет? — Вон там.Where's the toilet? — Over there.
- Где Аня? — Вот она, тут.Where's Anya? — Here she is.
- Это близко или далеко? — Близко, рядом.Is it close or far? — Close, nearby.
- Мой дом близко, не далеко.My house is close, not far.

Ложный друг Р и твёрдое Г— The false friend Р and the hard Г
Careful with the "false friend" letters. "Р" is NOT the English "P", but the sound "r" (rolled): "рядом" = "RYA-dom", not "pyadom". "В" is "v", not "B": "вон там" = "von tam", "вода" = "va-DA". The "Г" in "где" is hard: "gde" (one push, г+д together). The place adverbs are short: "тут" = "tut", "там" = "tam", "вон там" = "von tam". Read aloud and remember: Р = "r", В = "v". Trust your ear.
Read aloud, remembering Р and В:
