El animal más grandeThe biggest animal

Nature and animals. Vocabulary: el animal, el perro, el gato, el pájaro, el árbol, la flor, el río, la montaña, el mar, el bosque. Key point: the superlative says who is the MOST in a group — article + más/menos + adjective + de: "el elefante es el animal más grande DE la sabana" (the elephant is the biggest animal in the savanna), "la jirafa es la más alta DE todas" (the giraffe is the tallest of all). Note: here "de" means "in/among" (not "from"). Irregular forms: bueno → el mejor (the best), malo → el peor (the worst). In ch. 26 you saw the comparative "más… que" (comparing two); the superlative compares with the WHOLE group. English speakers calque English "-est" and drop the article or the "de": "el elefante es más grande animal" ✗ → "el elefante es el animal más grande" ✓.

The superlative: the biggest of all

Explanation

In ch. 26 you compared TWO things with "más + adjective + que": "El perro es más grande que el gato" (the dog is bigger than the cat). The SUPERLATIVE goes one step further: it marks the maximum (or minimum) within a WHOLE group. The formula is: article (el/la/los/las) + más/menos + adjective + de + group. "El elefante es el animal más grande de la sabana" (the elephant is the biggest animal in the savanna). "La ballena es el más grande de todos" (the whale is the biggest of all). "El ratón es el más pequeño" (the mouse is the smallest). Notice two things: (1) the article agrees with the noun (el/la/los/las) and (2) then comes "de", which here means "in/among" — NOT "from": "el más alto de la clase" = the tallest IN the class. With a noun, the order is article + noun + más + adjective: "el animal más rápido" (the fastest animal). Two adjectives are irregular: bueno → el mejor (the best), malo → el peor (the worst) ("el mejor perro del mundo", the best dog in the world). Typical mistake by English speakers: they calque English "-est" (biggest) and drop the article or the "de": "es más grande animal" ✗ → "es el animal más grande" ✓.
