Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 18
Một ngày của tôiMy day
Describing your daily actions. Vietnamese does NOT conjugate verbs and does NOT use "là" before a verb: just "tôi làm việc", "tôi ăn cơm" — English speakers often translate "I am working" as "tôi là làm việc", but "là" only goes before a NOUN (tôi là sinh viên). For habits, use the bare verb: "Tôi thức dậy lúc sáu giờ". "Thường" = usually, before the verb. New words: thức dậy, ngủ, đi làm, về nhà, làm việc, nấu ăn, thường, rồi, mỗi ngày, sau đó. Pronunciation corner: the tones of "dậy, làm, nấu".

Bare verbs (no "là" before a verb)
Explanation
Vietnamese verbs do NOT change form: "tôi ăn", "bạn ăn", "họ ăn" — the same "ăn". For habits (daily), just use the bare verb: "Tôi thức dậy lúc sáu giờ", "Tôi làm việc". IMPORTANT: "là" only links before a NOUN (tôi LÀ sinh viên), NOT before a verb or adjective. English speakers often add "là" thinking of "I AM working" → "tôi là làm việc" ✗ → "tôi làm việc" ✓. "Thường" (usually), "mỗi ngày", "buổi sáng/tối" mark habit. Chain actions with "rồi" / "sau đó".
Examples
- Tôi thức dậy lúc sáu giờ.I wake up at six.
- Buổi sáng tôi đi làm.In the morning I go to work.
- Tôi thường nấu ăn ở nhà.I usually cook at home.
- Tôi làm việc rồi về nhà.I work, then go home.
