Vietnamese · KNLTV Bậc 1 (A1) · Chapter 19
Ở nhà hàngAt the restaurant
Ordering at a restaurant. The key point: the CLASSIFIER. When counting, Vietnamese needs "number + classifier + noun": một CON cá, hai BÁT phở, ba LY cà phê, một CÁI bánh. "Con" for animals, "cái" for objects, "bát/tô" for soupy dishes, "ly/cốc" for drinks. English speakers often drop the classifier ("một cá" ✗ → "một con cá" ✓). Order: "Cho tôi…" or "Tôi gọi…". New words: nhà hàng, quán, món, gọi, thực đơn, phở, cơm, cái, con, bát. Pronunciation corner: the tones of "phở, gọi, món".

Classifiers: number + classifier + noun
Explanation
When COUNTING, Vietnamese inserts a CLASSIFIER between the number and the noun: "number + classifier + noun". một CON cá, hai BÁT phở, ba LY cà phê, một CÁI bánh. Choose the classifier by the noun: "con" for animals (con cá, con gà), "cái" for objects (cái bàn, cái bánh), "bát/tô" for soupy dishes (bát phở), "ly/cốc" for drinks. English speakers often drop it because English just says "one fish" — "một cá" ✗ → "một con cá" ✓. Order: "Cho tôi + [number] + [classifier] + [dish]": Cho tôi một bát phở.
Examples
- Cho tôi thực đơn.The menu, please.
- Tôi gọi một bát phở.I order a bowl of pho.
- Cho tôi hai con cá.Give me two fish.
- Quán này có nhiều món.This eatery has many dishes.
